New paper: maximum groundwater pumping in head-controlled reclaimed coastal aquifers

Conceptual model of a reclaimed coastal aquifer between the sea and a river, showing areal recharge, a pumping well, two hydraulic-conductivity zones, the freshwater–seawater interface, and two well-location scenarios.

Our latest paper, "Maximum pumping in head-controlled reclaimed coastal aquifers: effects of horizontal heterogeneity and areal recharge," has been published in Advances in Water Resources. We develop an analytical solution to estimate maximum pumping rates in reclaimed coastal aquifers with fixed-head boundaries. The solution agrees closely with numerical simulations, with a mean absolute relative error of 2.16%. Results show that longer reclamation areas, lower-permeability fill, and areal recharge generally increase pumping capacity while mitigating seawater intrusion.
